This painting is a nostalgic exploration of being a little girl. The name is something women now say about their childhood friends: “we were girls together”, and that phrase captures sharing all the highs and lows of being a girl: not being alone when you play with dolls, when your mom makes you cry… Girls on this painting are making friendship bracelets – that’s inspired by a memory of mine. Perpetuating friendship with a thread bracelet is an intimate, beautiful bonding experience.
Femininity is a multidimensional concept that many intuitively try to simplify. ‘Midsummer‘ explores the unity of women with nature, the feeling of being light and innocent. Dry flowers symbolize youth and maidenhood, hinting at the Slavic holiday ‘Kupala Night’, related to summer solstice. when flowers were woven into a maiden’s wreath to float down the river at night and predict her fate. Tradition plays a big part of being a woman, whether it is for the better or for worse.
